About Jerry Andrews

DSC_9218.jpeg

I started my career in the film and TV industry in 1980, after graduating with a degree in 3D design. My first job was helping fabricate animatronic characters for Jim Henson's movie "The Dark Crystal". I then spent 11 years working for UK animation company Cosrove Hall - first in the model department, and then as a camera and lighting technician. It was in this role I began to use motion control equipment, for animated camera moves.

After a brief spell teaching animation at London's Royal College of Art, in 1993 I joined Telecine Cell in Soho, London, a full service company with motion control studios, film transfer, digital compositing and CG animation. At this time, motion control was used extensively for TV commercials, station idents, music video and VFX sequences for TV and film. It was here that I began to work as a VFX supervisor, and also designed the lighting on TV idents and music videos. After 5 years working both in the UK and internationally for Telecine, I was invited to join Command Post ("Toybox") in Toronto, Canada, to head up the motion control department. This involved me in more movie and TV series work, as well as a large volume of commercials, music videos and other North American production. I continued to handle lighting design on smaller productions, and to work as a VFX supervisor. also handling feature film script breakdown for Command Post.

In 2003 I went freelance, and in 2005 I founded Kinetic Camera  with business partner Craig Perrin. We purchased motion control equipment and contrubuted to productions across Canada and often in the USA. At the same time, I worked as a freelance operator for motion control owners internationally, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, China, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and elsewhere. I have also worked under contract to Technicolor and Spin VFX, as a VFX supervisor.Since 2014 I have concentrated on freelance operating for companies in North America and beyond. I can also offer training in motion control operation, and in the last 12 months I have spent a total of 2 months training crews in India and Mexico. I own motion control equipment, and have designed many accessories for SFX and VFX applications. I can work in 'offline virtual' applications to contribue to pre-production design and testing of concepts.
